Tips for a Safe Trip with Kids

How can I travel safely with my child this summer?
This is an important question for all parents, which is why I decided to write this article to help you stay organized!

For a new mom, summer trips can feel like Mission Impossible—I completely understand. Over time, though, every parent finds their rhythm, and trips turn into enjoyable family moments that recharge us for the year ahead while creating beautiful memories.

I still remember our first vacation with Odysseas when he was just six months old. I think I packed enough to fill a shipping container!

Three years, three summers, and two kids later, I’ve relaxed and learned exactly what to do to ensure both the kids and I feel safe. Below, I’ll share my top tips for each mode of transportation. Hopefully, they’ll make your travels easier and much safer!

Traveling by Car with Kids

When traveling by car:

  • Light breakfast: Offer your child a light meal about two hours before the trip (I prefer solid foods like toast or bread) and avoid giving them too many liquids to prevent motion sickness.
  • Music: Play your favorite children’s songs and sing along!
  • Neck pillows: Always bring neck pillows so they can sleep comfortably without straining their necks.
  • Window shades: Don’t forget window shades to block the harsh sunlight during the trip.
  • Car seat: Always use a proper car seat to keep your child safely secured throughout the journey.

Traveling by Plane with Kids

What to pack for air travel:

  • Earplugs: To prevent ear discomfort during pressure changes.
  • Pacifiers: Help alleviate ear pain during takeoff and landing.
  • Neck pillows: To keep their necks comfortable.
  • Warm clothes: Bring a sweater and socks, as it can get chilly on flights.
2
  • Entertainment: Pack storybooks or other small activities to keep them occupied.

Traveling by Ferry with Kids

  • Don’t leave for a ferry trip without:
  • Art supplies: Coloring books and crayons to keep them entertained at the tables.
  • Blankets: Ferries are often quite cold, so a blanket will come in handy.
  • Snacks: Bring solid snacks to avoid seasickness from the rolling waves.
  • Extra clothes: Pack a change of clothes in case of any "accidents."

The “Golden Five” Travel Essentials

No matter how you’re traveling, always bring these essentials:

  1. Bottle or water cup: Keep your child hydrated, offering small sips (around 10) if they feel dizzy.
  2. Diapers: Pack double what you’d usually need  and opt for Babylino Sensitive Cotton Soft diapers for proven safe and skin friendly protection.
5
  1.     Baby wipes: Trust me, Babylino Sensitive wipes will be invaluable during the trip.

  2. Changing mat: A Babylino Sensitive bedpad makes diaper changes hassle-free anywhere.

  3. Health booklet: Never travel without your child’s health record.
