35th week

LET'S GET MEASURED!
Size of baby: 45 cm
Baby's weight: 2.5 kg
Dear mommy, it's time (and the week) to tell you that your baby has developed its most basic functions and now it just gains weight. A dark green substance is observed in the bowels, called "meconium" and it is essentially waste gathered from the liver and intestines during this period. The kidneys and liver are fully developed and can now process some substances too... The doctor is our friend and we will now visit him once a week!

DID YOU KNOW THAT?

...At this stage of pregnancy, all babies have blue eyes? Of course! The colour of its eyes will be completed a few weeks after birth. The iris of the eye needs light to... decide what colour to choose for your baby! So, until the process of iris pigmentation is completed, probably the entire family will wonder (if none of you has it) where did it get the blue eyes from. For nature is the answer! Wait a bit and you will... see!
Your tummy is the home of an about 2.5 kg baby, which is cramped inside the amniotic sac and pushing your inner organs, right and left. Is it possible to feel comfortably? Of course not... To understand the "journey" your organs are making at the beginning of pregnancy, your uterus was "hidden" lower into your pelvis and now it is under... your ribs! Crowding, gastrointestinal disturbances, everything is upside-down inside your body, without realising it exactly. Your body is preparing for the big day...
Let's see the medical details now. Sometime this week and until the 37th week, you will need to have a vaginal and a rectal examination, so that your doctor can check whether there is occurrence of bacteria called group B streptococcus (GBS). The examination is simple and is done using cotton buds, so you will not feel uncomfortable. GBS does not usually cause problems in adults, but during pregnancy it may entail severe complications for the mother and baby during labour, such as pneumonia, meningitis or blood infection. Do not expect to see symptoms, since you may not know it even if you are a carrier. Statistically, it occurs to approximately 10-30% of pregnant women. The good news is that it is treated with an antibiotic that your doctor will administer you, thus greatly reducing the risk of the baby getting it too. So everything is fine!
What would you think about giving birth into water? It's a solution chosen by many expectant mothers in recent years, because it has many advantages. Experts argue that this type of labour significantly relieves the pain due to the buoyancy of water that allows your back not to "lift" the weight of the entire body on its own, while at the same time it is a safe method (provided that there are no complications so far), allowing the baby to have a smooth transition from "swimming" in amniotic fluid... to "swimming" in water! If you are seriously considering it, do not stall any longer, get immediately informed about it from your doctor.

Advice
A good idea now that you spend many hours at home is to make the first photo album of your baby. Using which pictures? But of course with the ultrasound that you have collected so many weeks now! Lay on the table your own photos too from the beginning of pregnancy and put them in order. From the first month until today. You can place next to each page the corresponding ultrasound of the month. Someday, you will show to your child how it all started.....
Have a pleasant week... and enjoy your photo album!
