Infant Skin Care: Baby Bathing
Particularly for infants and toddlers who wear diapers and essentially live in a moist environment, daily care is crucial, often several times a day.
Key Tips for Baby Skin Care
- Choose the right diaper:
Select a diaper that is gentle on the baby’s skin and offers high absorbency. - Wash the baby with running water during every diaper change:
- Check the water temperature before bathing your baby.
- Use a small amount of baby body wash and shampoo, though not necessarily every time.
- For baby girls:
Pour water from front to back during washing to prevent infections. - Dry thoroughly, especially in folds:
Focus on areas between the legs, behind the knees, and around the perianal area, as residual moisture can lead to fungal growth. - Special care for the umbilical cord (early days):
- If the umbilical cord has not fallen off, clean the area with sterile gauze and 70° alcohol.
- Fold the diaper below the umbilical area to keep it exposed and dry.
- Use a moisturizer:
- Apply a hydrating cream all over the baby’s body as often as needed to keep the skin smooth and soft.
- Depending on the day, you might apply it once or up to 3-4 times (or more).
- If your baby has eczema or another skin condition, consult your pediatrician for the appropriate type of moisturizer.
- Diaper area care:
- Apply a small amount of diaper rash cream in the diaper area.
- Avoid using excessive amounts to allow the skin to "breathe."
